A homeowner in Antioch, IL recently was having problems with water leaking into his attic. He had previously called another roofing company to look at the problem, but that company could not find anything wrong.  To complicate matters, the leak was only happening during big storms or storms lasting for a long time.

ZEO Roofing was called, inspected the roof for leak sources and discovered the problem was not enough caulking between the chimney (or stove) pipe and the storm collar.  Pictured above is where new caulking by ZEO Roofing was need to repair the damages and help prevent future leaks.

Pictured to the left is a storm collar attached to the stove pipe with the lower part of the flange overlapping the lower roof shingles with new caulking.  Note the upper and both sides of the flange are covered by roof shingles.

When the roof cap and the chimney pipe both get wet, water begins to run down the pipe into the storm collar. If the storm collar isn’t properly caulked, the water gets in between the pipe and the storm collar. It then continues down into the flashing since they are separate parts so water can easily get between. Once the water gets behind the flashing that means that the water is already in your attic.This water can damage your insulation, wood boards, drywall as well as your belongings. Properly applied caulk can easily solve the problem.
